The ACT Government is holding firm on its commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2045, after a crossbencher tried to force the timeline to be reduced by five years.
Kurrajong Independent MLA Thomas Emerson then introduced an amendment which called on the government to bring forward its net-zero target to 2040.
He argued while some would “roll your eyes” given how small the Territory was, he argued that what Canberra did mattered.
“The ACT has long been considered a climate leader and with our reputation as a testing ground for bold, evidence-based reform, we have the chance – and I say the responsibility – to show the country, even the world, what’s possible,” Mr Emerson said.
