The ACT Government is doubling down on its plans to build the new Canberra Aquatic Centre at Commonwealth Park, saying it will not look at redeveloping the existing Canberra Olympic Pool.
Chief Minister Andrew Barr also made clear in the Assembly this week that the National Capital Authority approached the ACT Government with the idea of an aquatic centre being built in Commonwealth Park and the government agreed, paving the way for federal funding for the project.
Independent Member for Kurrajong Thomas Emerson has sponsored a petition calling on the government to amend the tender for the aquatic centre in Commonwealth Park so it includes a five-metre-deep dive pool, with springboards and platform diving facilities - as is currently provided at the Canberra Olympic Pool.
The petition has so far been signed by more than 700 people.
