A new pedestrian crossing on Canberra Avenue, where two schoolboys were hit by a stolen vehicle in March 2025, is now operating, but debate rages on around what the speed limit for the area should be.
Works on the new signalled crossing began in May and required motorists using the road to slow down to 40 km/h, down from the original 60 km/h drivers must otherwise follow.
The promise for the crossing was made after two schoolboys were seriously injured by a driver high on meth in March last year. However, despite the roadworks reducing the speed limit by 20 km/h, once all the roadworks in the area are completed, the limit will revert to 60 km/h.
Independent MLA Thomas Emerson said the Canberra Avenue crossing is a good first step to addressing safety issues, but he believes the speed limit in the area should be reduced from 60 km/h to 40 km/h.
“Both school communities have been calling for road safety improvements along Canberra Avenue for decades. It’s great to finally see this crossing in operation,” he said.
