A long-vacant community building in Ainslie was always likely to have been demolished and rebuilt even before a fire ravaged the structure, the government says.
A community consultation period will open later this month on the long-term future use of the site at 91A Wakefield Gardens, which had been vacant for two decades before the blaze brought forward demolition plans. More than 600 people signed a petition to the Legislative Assembly calling for a community hub and commencement date for reactivation before the building was destroyed in an early morning fire on August 19 that police suspect was deliberately lit.
Kurrajong independent Thomas Emerson, who sponsored the petition, has been promoting a community forum on Friday on the future of Wakefield Gardens.
