The Assembly formally reviews each election to ensure the ACT’s elections remain fair, lawful and appropriate, and to consider potential amendments to the Electoral Act.
Thomas proposed important amendments to the inquiry’s terms of reference which were agreed to and adopted by the Government prior to the motion being put to the Assembly.
Thomas’ changes expanded the initial terms of the inquiry to include consideration of public election funding (currently $10.15 per vote), an assessment of the sufficiency of mobile voting places to maximise voter enfranchisement in disconnected areas like Oaks Estate, and reviewing Elections ACT’s instructions for voters to ensure they’re accessible, accurate and comprehensible for community members.
