This motion, brought by Liberal MLA James Milligan, called on the ACT Government to better support businesses located on London Circuit who are affected by the light rail construction works that recently commenced.
Road closures and other disruptions mean businesses are experiencing decreased foot traffic. With the high cost of living and soaring insurance premiums, small businesses in Canberra are already doing it tough.
While supportive of the light rail works, Thomas is concerned by the lack of meaningful support to small businesses in the area, who face a significant challenge to remain viable during construction over the next two to three years. In his remarks during the debate, he spoke of the human impact of small business closures on their owners, their staff and their customers.
Thomas supported the motion, and will continue to use his voice in the Assembly to advocate for small business owners. Labor also supported the motion, and outlined steps they have already taken to support small businesses affected by the works, although Thomas argued that ongoing communication and engagement alone were not sufficient. The motion passed with unanimous support.
