Liberal MLA Ed Cocks moved a motion calling on the ACT Government to address traffic congestion in Molonglo Valley, deliver on existing road infrastructure plans, and engage in longer-term road infrastructure planning in the area.
Thomas successfully moved amendments to add considerations of public transport and active travel infrastructure requirements in Molonglo Valley. Thomas’ position reflected his view that Canberra needs to move away from car dependency, and toward a forward-thinking infrastructure system that prioritises public transport and active travel. This reorientation of transport infrastructure planning mitigates the negative economic, health and climate related consequences of excessive private vehicle usage, while giving consideration to the wellbeing of Future Generations.
The Greens brought forward similar amendments specific to the requirements of Molonglo Valley, further emphasising the importance of bus services in reducing traffic congestion. These amendments were agreed to by the Assembly, although Greens amendments to the motion to replace the phrase “comprehensive roads and infrastructure plan” with “comprehensive transport plan” and the phrase “the roads and infrastructure plan” with “a Molonglo Valley Transport plan” were voted down by the two major parties, despite having Thomas’ support.
