This motion from Greens MLA Andrew Braddock called on the Government to better resource the ACT’s libraries. It asked for the implementation of a strategic plan for Libraries ACT, expanded opening hours, increased minimum library staffing levels, and the hiring of more permanent staff.
The Liberals amended the motion to remove the Greens’ demand for increased staffing levels. Instead, they included a provision to conduct modelling to determine the level of staff needed and the cost of the increase, as well as assessing demand for Libraries ACT’s services. This information will be reported back to the Assembly by the last sitting day in May.
Thomas voted in support of the Liberals’ amendment on the basis that he thought it prudent to determine the cost of increasing staffing levels before committing to doing so. Labor and fellow independent MLA Fiona Carrick also supported the amendment, which the Greens opposed, before the amended motion passed on the voices.
