Liberal MLA Ed Cocks brought a motion calling on the Government to deliver a police station in the Molonglo Valley before December 2026, citing data suggesting that crime in Woden and Weston Creek exceeds ACT averages.
Thomas supported the intent of the motion in principle, but was concerned that the data misrepresented the situation and used his remarks to counter rhetoric from the Liberals about the level of crime in Canberra. He also did not want to push the Government to prioritise the development of a Molonglo Valley police station at the expense of a much-needed new City Police Station, which sits before the Molonglo Valley station in the Government’s infrastructure pipeline.
Police Minister Marisa Paterson MLA noted that the Government had already made an election commitment to build a Molonglo Valley police station, and amended Mr Cocks’s motion to require the Government to report back to the Assembly by October 2025 on its progress.
Thomas supported the amendment, and the amended motion passed with the support of the Greens and Labor.
