Greens MLA Jo Clay brought a motion seeking to compel the Government to set and establish an urban growth boundary by 2027. This would limit how far development can sprawl beyond Canberra’s existing outer edges, and ensure future development focuses on sensible infill.
Thomas supported this motion because of its potential economic, social, and environmental benefits. Sensibly increasing density allows people to live closer to services, and encourages social cohesion around shared spaces. Because of this increased proximity, people are also more likely to spend at local businesses, and to use public and active transport.
Most importantly, an urban growth boundary or ‘city limit’ will preserve the beautiful natural landscape surrounding our city, and help protect the native species that call it home.
The motion was passed by the Assembly, despite being opposed by the Liberals.
