Thomas co-sponsored a motion with Canberra Liberals MLA Elizabeth Lee and ACT Greens MLA Shane Rattenbury, calling on the Government to establish a five-year strategic plan for the suburb of Oaks Estate.
The most disadvantaged suburb in the ACT, Oaks Estate has no dedicated ACT bus routes or schools, minimal social support services, and almost half of the dwellings are public housing. Social isolation and inadequate government support has resulted in escalating antisocial behaviour and crime. Thomas believes it is simply not good enough that in a progressive jurisdiction like the ACT, some of the most vulnerable members of our community remain forgotten.
The motion sought to holistically solve these issues through the establishment of a five-year strategic plan that includes short-, medium-, and long-term actions.
The motion passed unamended with unanimous support across the Assembly. The Government is required to table the strategic plan in the Assembly within six months, and to report back within 12 months and annually thereafter on implementation progress.
