ACT Labor MLA Caitlin Tough brought forward a motion calling on the Government to develop teaching resources that align with the updated food and nutrition Australian Curriculum to foster positive and inclusive relationships with food.
ACT Greens MLA Laura Nuttall moved amendments calling on the Government to consult with non-government organisations, procure education resources on disordered eating and diverse food needs, and to explore the potential to integrate developed curriculum materials with existing programs such as meals in schools as the program expands.
Thomas moved further amendments acknowledging the way social media algorithms are designed to elicit negative self-perceptions of body image, and calling on the Government to educate students about how social media algorithms can shape their attitudes toward food and body image.
The motion with both Thomas’ and Miss Nuttall’s amendments passed with unanimous support.
