Following media reporting that the new CEO of CIT, Dr Margot McNeill, was found to have engaged in misconduct at her previous role at TAFE NSW, Canberra Liberals Leader Mark Parton MLA introduced a motion to the Assembly calling on the ACT Legislative Assembly’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts and Administration to inquire into the recruitment process. The ACT Greens moved amendments, which removed the “calls” in the motion and replaced them with “requests”, which was unanimously agreed to by the Assembly.
Thomas spoke in support of the motion, where he highlighted concerns around the CIT recruitment process, noting that most ACT Government job applications contained a tick box requiring the applicant to disclose whether they had been found to have engaged in misconduct or were currently subject to an investigation or had resigned while subject to a formal misconduct investigation. He argued that Canberrans would expect parliamentary oversight and appropriate scrutiny of this matter, particularly given the former CEO of CIT had been found by the ACT Integrity Commission to have engaged in serious corrupt conduct during her time in the role.
This motion was unanimously agreed to by the Assembly. Public hearings are set to be held on Monday 30 March 2026.
