Independent Member for Kurrajong Thomas Emerson MLA has described the Chief Minister’s announcement of reduced monthly fare caps on public transport as an indication that the ACT Government is not taking the impact of the fuel crisis on Canberrans seriously enough.
“While it’s positive to see the ACT Government taking some action, what’s been announced is unlikely to encourage Canberrans out of their cars onto public transport,” Mr Emerson said.
“The fare cap changes are strangely complex and unlikely to land with people who don’t already use public transport.”
“Our community is calling for a strong government response, not a weak non-announcement.
“Earlier this week, I wrote to the Chief Minister with a number of practical measures to support Canberrans through this fuel crisis.”
Mr Emerson said he asked the Chief Minister to take five proposed measures to yesterday’s meeting of the ACT Government’s Security and Emergency Management Cabinet, including:
- Discounted or free public transport to incentivise significantly increased uptake.
- Dedicated bus lanes on as many rapid bus routes as possible to increase the convenience and efficiency of public transport, maximising its viability as an alternative transport option.
- Pop-up cycle lanes, similar to those used around construction sites, on key transit corridors like Northbourne Avenue.
- Adding e-bikes to the ACT Government’s Sustainable Household Scheme to support further active travel uptake.
- Targeted cost-of-living relief including increased funding for food relief organisations and direct support for individuals through mechanisms like fuel vouchers to be administered by a local organisation such as Care Financial.
“I understand wanting to avoid knee-jerk reactions, but resting on our laurels isn’t fair to Canberrans either,” Mr Emerson said.
“This crisis isn’t going away any time soon, and I’m urging the ACT Government to take meaningful action to support our community.
“We need to help people reduce their fuel use, while ensuring sufficient support is available for those who can’t access alternative transport options.
“We also need to look at direct support for vulnerable community members, families and organisations struggling with the acute cost-of-living impact of this crisis.
“I appreciate that this crisis is evolving quickly, and I’m hopeful that the ACT Government will announce a more substantive package of measures soon.”
