Opposition Leader Mark Parton and Elizabeth Lee MLA introduced a motion calling on the ACT Government to undertake a formal feasibility and scoping study into establishing a regional paediatric oncology and haematology service at Canberra Hospital, in partnership with the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network. The motion required the Government to report back to the Assembly by 1 December 2026 on the outcome of the feasibility and scoping exercise, discussions with NSW and tertiary clinical partners, the preferred service model and proposed reforms to the ACT Interstate Patient Travel Assistance Scheme (IPTAS).
The Greens moved amendments that extended this deadline to 30 June 2027, while also requiring an interim report into IPTAS reforms to be completed by March 2027.
Thomas spoke in support of the motion and the amendments. In his remarks, he highlighted the emotional and financial impacts that Canberran families face when having to travel outside of the ACT to access specialist care for their children. Thomas also emphasised that the need for a local specialised service extends far beyond Canberra to regional NSW.
The motion, as amended, was supported unanimously.
