A fire-ravaged community building in Ainslie – long at the centre of debate over its future – is set to be demolished, with the ACT Government confirming plans to clear the site by the end of 2026.
Championed by Independent MLA Thomas Emerson, a separate proposal from the Wakefield Gardens Working Group went further.
This 21-page document outlined a three-phase vision for the site, including a co-designed native garden and urban farm, a rebuilt two-storey community hall, and a nature-based playground (similar to the one in the nearby Haig Park).
“We believe Wakefield Gardens should be part of this wider renewal,” the group said, describing the property as a potential “third place” where people can connect outside home and work.
