When Simone Black was pregnant, she’d gazed with excitement at the Watson development that would eventually become the Inner North playground.
But when the multi-million dollar destination-style play space opened last year, Ms Black felt disappointed and frustrated.
“When it was open, we were like ‘wait, is this done?'” she said.
The playground consists of a grassed amphitheatre, two multi-use courts, accessible play equipment, slides, swings and cubby houses.
Kurrajong independent MLA Thomas Emerson is sponsoring Ms Black’s petition.
He felt the ACT-built shade shouldn’t just be considered for central community and district play spaces.
“They should be ‘considered’, so there’s no obligation to include them,” Mr Emerson said.
“There’s a preference for tree shade, which is understandable, but when you have really young trees that are going to take many years to grow, in the interim, you’ve got no shade.
“I struggle to understand why you would spend millions of dollars on a brand new playground that can’t be used on really hot days.”
