Canberra’s persistently higher petrol prices are set to face another parliamentary inquiry, seven years after an earlier investigation examined why motorists were paying more than drivers across the border.
Independent MLA Thomas Emerson also supported the motion, saying high fuel prices were affecting not only households but community organisations, taxi and rideshare drivers and workers whose earnings depended heavily on driving.
He said the reasons Canberra continued to have higher fuel prices remained unclear and he wanted the committee to examine whether recent anti-price-gouging measures were having any effect.
“This does have an impact in all sorts of different ways,” he said.
Mr Emerson said the inquiry should establish why Canberrans were “getting such a raw deal” and whether further intervention was required.
The economics committee will now consider whether to launch the inquiry.
