The future of Yarralumla Primary School’s bilingual program is at a crossroads, as the Education Directorate conducts a review of the inner south school.
But in a submission to the review, Independent MLA Thomas Emerson says the school community fears the program will be eroded even more than it has over the past seven years, despite it contributing to above average NAPLAN results.
Mr Emerson is urging the Directorate to ensure any changes are developed with the school community.
“Any move to further reduce or eliminate the Yarralumla Primary School’s bilingual program would worsen, rather than improve, the quality of students’ educational experience,” he says.
Mr Emerson says that since 2019, the program has been progressively weakened, with language proficiency targets downgraded.
