An ACT Legislative Assembly committee will examine a proposed ban on political donations from the gambling industry.
The Electoral (Gambling Industry) Amendment Bill 2026 — introduced by independent MLA Thomas Emerson earlier this month — would amend the Electoral Act 1992 to prohibit gifts and donations from the gambling industry and associated entities to political entities.
“It’s a serious problem when politicians are captured by vested interests,” Mr Emerson said.
Analysis by Mr Emerson’s office found that ACT Labor and the Canberra Liberals had collectively received more than $275,000 worth of donations from gambling industry entities in the last decade, including cash, in-kind contributions, and free facilities use.
