After a six-year absence, National Ride2Work Day, Australia’s biggest celebration of commuter riding, returned to Canberra this morning.
The event was last held in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic. Pedal Power ACT executive director Cecily Michaels decided it was time to bring it back.
“Cycling to work is one of the simplest ways to improve your health, save money, cut pollution, and arrive at work feeling energised,” Ms Michaels said. “This event was about celebrating those who already ride and inspiring many more to give it a go.”
Mr Emerson also believes reform is needed.
“If we’re serious about getting more Canberrans on their bikes, we need to invest in infrastructure that makes cycling more appealing than driving. I’ve been pushing for a full costing and delivery timeline for the ACT Government’s Active Travel Plan, which contains a great Cycling Network Map but with no indication of when it will be completed.
“Investing in active travel infrastructure has massive cross-portfolio-benefits, including preventing chronic illness, improving mental health and helping with the cost of living by reducing people’s travel costs.
“Separated bike lanes are better for cyclists and motorists alike. There’s huge potential for Canberra to be leading the nation when it comes to active travel investments, and organisations like Pedal Power ACT deserve a lot of credit for their relentless advocacy in this area.”
