A senior Aboriginal official in the ACT's public service has told an inquiry into a proposed law to overhaul public servants' accountability for improving the lives of First Nations people he does not feel culturally safe in his workplace.
Brendan Moyle, the executive branch manager of the ACT Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, appeared on Thursday before the Legislative Assembly inquiry examining a bill that would add a legal obligation on senior public servants to improve cultural safety and outcomes for First Nations people.
The Assembly's public accounts and administration standing committee is examining Kurrajong independent Thomas Emerson's private member's bill, which would require senior ACT public servants to work to a new "Closing the Gap principle", including promoting cultural safety and eliminating institutional racism.
