It isn’t the dramatic hazards that worry Kidsafe ACT the most. It’s the everyday ones.
The child safety organisation has launched a campaign urging Canberra childcare centres to voluntarily adopt a 20-point safety pledge that goes beyond existing regulations to reduce preventable injuries.
Independent MLA Thomas Emerson, who has spent much of the past year advocating for stronger child safety protections in the ACT’s early childhood sector, welcomed the initiative.
“As an expert local authority on children’s safety, Kidsafe has developed clear guidance for centres about practical changes that would increase safety for children in their care, and the ACT Government should look closely at formally endorsing this guidance,” he told Region.
He noted that 98 per cent of respondents to a community survey he conducted earlier this year agreed reforms were needed to ensure children’s safety always comes first.
