With affordable housing becoming one of Canberra’s biggest challenges, Budget Estimates has revealed 588 ACT public housing homes were sitting vacant at the end of June — including 188 homes ready to be allocated to new tenants.
The figures sparked scrutiny during Thursday’s hearings, with independent MLA Thomas Emerson pressing Housing ACT officials over why so many homes were empty and whether the Territory’s ageing public housing stock was slowing the system down.
Mr Emerson then asked what many people waiting for housing would also want to know — how long do homes stay vacant before someone can move in?
Housing ACT could not provide an answer during the hearing, saying the timeframe depended on the work required and that average vacancy periods would be provided later.
