Independent MLA Thomas Emerson has won Assembly support for examining a package of 13 reforms to strengthen safety standards in Canberra’s early childhood sector.
“We need to create a system that backs — and elevates — the many professional and highly competent early childhood educators who do thankless work every day supporting the safety and wellbeing of our children,” Mr Emerson said. “At the same time, we need to clamp down with real consequences where those priorities aren’t being upheld.”
The motion follows Mr Emerson’s push to release thousands of government documents which he said reveal disturbing cases of child abuse, inadequate supervision, and regulatory failure in Canberra’s early childhood sector.
Mr Emerson’s community survey found that 98 per cent of respondents agreed that the sector must be reformed to be safer.
